General Information

In December 1986 the Citizens of Calhoun County voted to implement an Enhanced 9-1-1 System.

In July of 1988, the Board of Commissioners for the Calhoun County 9-1-1 District appointed its first Director and the hard work began.  The county was addressed, giving each house or structure it's own unique address.  A building to house the system was purchased and re-modeled to fit the needs of an Emergency Communications system.  A staff of twelve personnel was hired and trained to perform the duties of a 9-1-1 Dispatcher.  The system became active on in March of 1989.

The Calhoun County 9-1-1 District is funded solely by a surcharge on telephone service.  A 4% charge of the Complete Choice package is collected for funding which equals to $1.36 per month for residential customers.  A $2.20 fee is collected for all business lines.  The revenue collected is used to pay all salaries and operational costs of the 9-1-1 District.

Wireless revenue received by the Calhoun County 9-1-1 District is based on population.  All monies collected from wireless phones are sent to the Alabama Wireless Board, which then remits monies back to the Calhoun County 9-1-1 District based on a percent of the state's population.  The use of wireless phones continues to increase and on average accounts for 60 % of the total calls received by the Calhoun County 9-1-1's Communication Center.
