Amy Adams
Communications
Training Officer
Calhoun County 9-1-1 District
The
Communications Training Officer (CTO) is responsible
for the training of new employees, as well as
established employees. Training is completed with
each employee on a monthly basis. While the CTO is
training new employees, the shift supervisors will
be responsible for completing the monthly training
with each of the employees working on their shifts.
The initial
training of new employees consists of SOP review,
weekly quizzes, an in-depth review of the Positron
Power 9-1-1 system, as well as the UHF, VHF and 800
MHz radio systems, and simulator training. Each
employee is EMD and APCO certified. The initial
training period for a new employee takes
approximately 3 – 6 months. After the completion of
the initial training period, each employee is placed
with a shift supervisor to complete the employee’s
training. (Each new employee is placed on a
one-year probationary period). At the end of the
training period, the employee is placed “on line”
which means the employee is ready to process calls
without the presence of a shift supervisor.
The monthly
training for each employee covers each of the
following areas: EMD review; Hazmat, APCO, SOP
review, etc. Additional items are covered, based on
the discretion of the CTO and/or shift supervisors,
and any unusual situation that may arise. These may
include: Hazmat Refresher courses; Disaster
Planning; TTY classes, etc. Other classes may also
be hosted, for example, Domestic Violence and Rape
Counseling classes.
